Frame Setup

Do you need a box spring with a metal bed frame?

No. Most metal bed frames are designed to support a mattress directly, without a box spring. Frames with a built-in slat system or platform base make a box spring redundant.

Whether a metal bed frame needs a box spring depends on its construction. Frames with closely spaced slats (3 inches apart or less) or a solid deck provide enough mattress support on their own. Rail-only frames with no slats or center support do still require a box spring or foundation to hold the mattress and meet most mattress warranty requirements. Always check the frame's slat spacing and your mattress manufacturer's support spec before skipping the box spring.

  • Metal platform frames with slats spaced 3 inches or less apart do not require a box spring.
  • Rail-only metal frames with no slat system require a box spring or separate foundation.
  • Most mattress warranties specify a maximum slat gap of 3 inches to stay valid without a box spring.
  • Adding a box spring to a metal platform frame can raise total bed height by 6–9 inches.
  • Metal bed frames with a center support bar are rated for direct mattress use across most weight capacities.
